Counselors have a master’s degree. In compliance with the requirements of the course for master’s degree, counselors learn to communicate with clients, assess and diagnose customer issues according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and theories counseling. Counselors must undergo this training to ensure that the level of care offered to customers in compliance with state licensing requirements. According to the National Council for Certified Counselors (NBCC), all states require licenses to practice as a counselor.
